As an outdoor wilderness camper being out of the thick for so many years, I am interested as to what are the norms for backpacks and associated gear. Currently planning some wilderness excursions for myself. All information will be retained for reference.
I back country as much as possible and regularly hike 4+ miles to reach a decent campsite. I carry a Low Alpine pack (the “Galyans” pack) and the following:

- Hat (maybe even a knit hat)
- Matches – water resistant or in a water resistant container
- Pencil/paper
- Signal mirror
- Sunglasses and sunscreen
- Watch or clock
- Water bottles (do they need to be filled prior to leaving?)
- Waterproof map of area
- Waterproof coat
- Whistle
